Casino de Montreal - INT Design

GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN – 7th édition Originally designed as ephemeral constructions for Expo 67, the former France and Quebec pavilions never cease to amaze by their longevity. True architectural Phoenix, these atypical volumes have been housing the Montreal Casino since the 1990’s. In order to live up to the sense of wonder it has been creating for so many years, the establishment had to be given a makeover. The modernization of this architectural icon was assigned to the consortium Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux / Provencher Roy Architectes, who won the Public Space Award and the Special Surface Award for this achievement. It all begun with a supreme architectural gesture: the canopy. The sculptural frame of this suspended component is reminiscent of the powerful original concrete structure; symbol of a respectful contemporary intervention that preserves the original aesthetic of a building. Leading figure of the project, the canopy spreads with open arms and stretches, it seems, as if to touch the city with its fingertips. Adorned with a gold, undulating cylinder that produces surreal lighting effects, the new entrance captivates the eye and leads visitors inside where a fabulous experience awaits them. Inside, the majestic lobby has been effectively optimized, and is symbolically connected to all areas by a common language: the game. From the entrance hall, the newcomer is naturally guided into an amazing journey where coloured rings dance around the elevator shaft and card decks figures line the walls and ceilings. In this festive atmosphere of dreamland accents, a special attention is given to details. In this regard, the perforated panels of the main entrance canopy are of great interest. Filtering a magical light, the aluminum lace reinforces a directional flow and validates the establishment’s recreational aspect. The flow and entrance create transparency and light, in which original architecture and new interventions form a unique and imaginative equilibrium.
